Carved Melon Turtle Boat Fruit Plate

Carved Melon Turtle Boat Fruit Plate

Overview

Speaking of fruit plate carvings that can hold fruits, in addition to watermelons, the most familiar one is the dragon boat carvings of cantaloupe. But fruits are really expensive now! In the past, cantaloupe cost only a few cents per pound, but now it costs several yuan per pound. In fact, we might as well use other cheap melons to carve and make fruit plates. Cantaloupe is my favorite, it is fragrant and sweet. So I bought a green-skinned cantaloupe, but it was impossible to make a dragon boat because the shape of the cantaloupe was not long enough and was generally a bit round. So let’s turn it into a turtle boat that can hold fruits! However, this turtle is a bit special. The turtle shell is decorated with various fruits, but there are some patterns around the belly. Of course, you can also shape it according to your preference.

Steps

  1. Wash the cantaloupe, lay it horizontally, choose the position of the sail on the boat, and then use a long fruit knife to slowly cut it off from the top half as shown in the picture. Pay attention to leaving a small square corner when it is almost halfway to the waist of the melon. The same is true for the other end. The side pointed by the arrow was careless when I was carving. When carving, please be careful to leave a small square corner like this side

  2. The lower half of the carved melon is surrounded by decorative patterns (see the circled area in the picture)

  5. The cantaloupe I just cut is now put to use. I carve out four turtle claws, tail and head, fix them with toothpicks, and decorate them with dark grape skins to make eyes

  6. Take another cantaloupe as a canvas, cut it into two rectangles with one large and one small curve, peel off some melon flesh, take a 0.5cm thick rind, and then carve out the lace on both sides and the pattern in the middle (you can use a special carving tool, I don’t have a carving knife). Be careful not to dig too deep into the pattern to prevent it from breaking

  7. Prepare a long barbecue bamboo stick, thread the two pieces of canvas you just carved together, and press it into a slightly curved arc shape. At the top, cut a small triangular flag from watermelon rind or dragon fruit peel and string it on top

  8. Okay, you can use a cutter or baller to dig out all the fruits you like and put them into the water ghost plate! Filled with fruits, the turtle boat starts sailing!
