Chess Shaobing
Overview
Chess piece sesame cake is a famous snack in the Tangshan area of Hebei Province. It is named after the large wooden chess piece that is shaped like a small drum and is similar in size and shape to a chess piece. This kind of sesame cake originates from Chengguan, Fengrun County, Hebei Province. Later, there was a very famous restaurant called Jiumei Zhai in Bianyi Street in Tangshan. The owner of the restaurant, Zhao Dongfu, popularized the chess piece pancake. His recipe is a pound of fine noodles, four ounces of chicken fat, half a pound of pork belly, and a layer of sesame seeds on the outside. You can also make a variety of fillings such as bean paste, assorted vegetables, sausages, and ham. It is said that in the 1960s, when Premier Zhou visited Poland, he sent people to Tangshan to buy chess cakes and gave them to foreign guests as national gifts.
