It’s my first time to make shaomai, but I can’t get it into a nice shape. The sizes of the shaomai are different. I’ve tried my best and hope I can improve next time!

  1. Wash and soak the mushrooms, wash the glutinous rice, soak in cold water for 2 hours and cook into glutinous rice.

  4. Put the minced meat, mushrooms, and carrots into a bowl, add light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, ginger powder, and pepper, mix well, and stir-fry until cooked.

  5. Mix the fried minced meat and glutinous rice together, add seasonings according to your preference and mix well. I added salt, pepper, oil, and finally a little soy sauce to enhance the color. For children, the glutinous rice should be mixed into smaller pieces, which is easier for children to digest.

  6. Put an appropriate amount of meat filling on the siu mai skin, fold the edges and then gather them. This is the first time I’m making shaomai. For me, pinching it together is more important than pinching it into shape, haha~

  7. Place the wrapped siomai neatly and put it in the refrigerator to freeze.

  8. The next morning, apply a little oil on the steamer grid to prevent sticking, place the siomai in place, boil the water and put the siomai into the steamer. Because the fillings are cooked, 10 minutes on high heat is enough.

  9. While steaming the shaomai, cook some egg drop rice wine, and your child’s breakfast is ready.
