Overview
Winter melon (scientific name: Benincasahispida (Thunb.) Cogn.) is an annual trailing or trellis herbaceous plant in the Cucurbitaceae family. The stem is covered with yellowish-brown bristles and villous hairs, with grooves. The petiole is thick, thickly bristled and villous. It is monoecious. The flowers are solitary. The fruit is long cylindrical or nearly spherical, large, with bristles and hoarfrost, and the seeds are oval. In addition to being used as vegetables, winter melon fruits can also be dipped into various candies; the peel and seeds are medicinal and have anti-inflammatory, diuretic and swelling effects.
