Pingtan’s special snacks come and go (sweet potato balls)
Overview
I remember one trip to Pingtan, Fujian Province, and I ate a local snack in a restaurant. The outer shell was made of sweet potatoes, and the filling was seafood and vegetables. It was very delicious and had a nice name. It was called "Shi Lai Lun Lun". I searched online and found out that there was an allusion. It was said that a long time ago, an upright official was falsely accused and imprisoned. His wife cooked him a lot of delicious food every day and sent him to the cell. However, he was detained by the jailer every time, and all the big fish and meat were eaten. It was always like this, that person wasted away day by day in prison. Once his wife went to see him in prison and saw that he was sallow and thin, so she asked him why he had lost so much weight despite giving him so much fish and meat. He said he had never seen anything fishy. Later her wife realized that she had been divided by the jailer. His wife was very smart, so she went home and made sweet potato skins with sweet potatoes and some flour, wrapped fish, meat, shrimps, etc. in it and gave it to him to eat. When the jailer saw that it was sweet potato balls, he sent them to the prison for him to eat. He ate the sweet potato balls that his wife made for him. Because they were filled with fish, his spirit got better day by day. Finally, he felt that he could no longer sink like this, and he felt an urgent desire to be with his wife, so he wrote a petition for himself, defending himself that he had been framed. Later, the emperor found out the truth and found out that he was wronged, so he reinstated him. Then he gave the sweet potato pill a name: Fortune.
